How to Practice Estonian Speaking at Home (Without a Tutor)

Speaking is the part most learners skip
It is easy to read and tap through an app for months and never say an Estonian word out loud. Then the first real conversation arrives and the mouth will not cooperate. Speaking is a physical skill, and it only improves with reps.
Estonian has a couple of things English does not: the vowel õ (a back, unrounded sound with no English equivalent) and three lengths, short, long and overlong, where the length of a sound changes the meaning. They take some ear-training, but Estonian is otherwise pronounced close to how it is written.
Five things you can do today
- Read aloud. Say every Estonian sentence you study out loud, even alone. Silent reading trains your eyes, not your mouth.
- Shadow native audio. Play a native recording and speak a beat behind it, copying the rhythm and vowel lengths.
- Record yourself. Your phone's voice recorder is a brutal but honest coach, compare with the native version.
- Name things out loud. Walk through your home naming objects: peegel, seep, voodi.
- Talk to yourself. Narrate small actions: Ma joon kohvi (I'm drinking coffee).
Where an app helps: and where it doesn't
Instant pronunciation feedback is genuinely useful: it tells you whether your word was clear enough to be understood, over and over, without a human getting bored. That is hard to replicate alone.
Be honest about the limits, though. An app checks single words and short phrases; it will not master the three-length system across a whole sentence for you, and it is no substitute for a real conversation. Use it to build confidence and clean up sounds, then take that into real talk.
A 10-minute daily speaking routine
Two minutes shadowing native audio, three minutes reading your lesson aloud, three minutes naming objects around you, two minutes recording and comparing. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.

Frequently asked questions
Can I learn to speak Estonian without a tutor?
You can get a long way alone, pronunciation, vocabulary and confidence with words and short phrases. For fluent conversation and the three-length system, real interaction eventually helps, but you do not need it to start.
How do I pronounce the Estonian õ?
It is a back, unrounded vowel with no English equivalent, roughly like saying "e" while pulling the tongue back and keeping the lips relaxed. The reliable way to learn it is to imitate native audio many times rather than chase a rule.
Does speech recognition work for Estonian?
Estonian is not supported by every phone's built-in recogniser, so EstoniaSpeak uses on-device speech that runs on your phone itself. For single words and short phrases it gives useful, private feedback that complements speaking with real people.
